This desk was a recent acquisition that I was very excited to get my hands on!
It was listing for a song on a local buy and sell website, and I knew I could make it over. When I picked it up, the gentleman told me that it had belonged to his great grandmother, and I loved it even more!
My favourite thing about it is that the back is also finished, which allows it to be placed anywhere in a room. Huge bonus! I’ve seen so many stunning home offices on Pinterest with similar desks taking centre stage. Gone are the times of furniture needing to be shoved against the walls, folks…
I decided that I wanted this desk to have a worn, cottagey feel – reminiscent of its age and history. I painted the bottom in a lovely duck egg blue and distressed it just a bit.
I painted the top in a light linen colour, and then sanded it and went over it with three different shades of wax to achieve a real “driftwood” finish. This involved sanding down the paint, and then buffing it with clear wax. Then sanding down the clear wax and buffing over it with dark wax. I layered it multiple times this way before I was happy with the finish.
Then I added new drawer pulls to give it just a touch of shimmer. I think they tie the top and the bottom together SO nicely.
I am so happy with the result! It’s pretty without being too precious, worn without being too shabby, and would make a beautiful addition to any room.
